Weekly Wish list #3

Week 3 of my shopping ban and its starting to get a little bit difficult. I've found myself constantly thinking about breaking my ban, telling myself no one will find out...but I will know! I was very tempted to buy the Shop Dixi Midi Ring, I tried convincing myself that a small treat wouldn't hurt but I managed to resist temptation. I haven't had much time for blog posts recently, and I didn't think I would miss it but I really have. Its starting to become part of my daily routine to come home from work and start working on a blog post. It's a great release for me and its a really great hobby. I'm determined to get back on the wagon, which will hopefully keep my mind of shopping...

DIY Aztec Denim Shorts

DIY Aztec Denim Shorts

As you can see from my bio, I like to craft. I love seeing something go from one thing to another and especially if it's something I get to wear. When we had that brief spell of sunny weather, I saw a lot of denim shorts with cool aztec style prints in different positions on the shorts. Some were all over, some just on the front and some just on the back pocket, they really caught my eye. I started looking round for a pair when it hit me. Why don't I just do it myself?! I have an old pair of shorts I don't use and you can always find cheap fabric on ebay...so thats what I did! :)

It's really easy to do and you need very little for this but it looks so effective, you can hardly tell I've done this myself.

Here's what you will need...

DIY Aztec Denim Shorts

A pair of old shorts
Some aztec printed fabric (I got mine from Ebay)
Tracing paper
Fabric Glue
Scissors
Pencil and Rubber

STEP 1 - Place your tracing paper directly over the area you want to add your fabric. trace around the area to give you a template

DIY Aztec Denim Shorts

STEP 2 - Cut out your template and put it into position on your shorts to make sure it is the right fit. Make any adjustments now to make sure it is perfect.

DIY Aztec Denim Shorts

STEP 3 - Once you've decided the template is ready, place it on top of your chosen fabric and cut it out. Use pins to secure it down if you find it easier.

DIY Aztec Denim Shorts

You should end up with something like this...

DIY Aztec Denim Shorts

STEP 4 - Using your fabric glue, lightly cover the fabric making sure you get right into the corners. Follow your glues instructions, on my glue I had to wait 10 minutes until it was tack before I applied it to my shorts. Also be careful of the fumes coming from your glue. I started getting a headache when I left mine open for a while.

DIY Aztec Denim Shorts

STEP 5 - Position your fabric onto your shorts and move around until you are happy with where it is placed. I would wait a further 10 minutes just to make sure its dry before wearing. And heres your finished product

Wish List #2

Topshop, Nike Blazer Hi Tops, Loreal Stain Splash, Ciate, Bourjois. Weekly wish list

Week two of my shopping ban and so far so good. I haven't bought anything that wasn't essential in one whole week, and yes I am classing the shower gel I bought at the weekend essential. I thought doing these wish lists would make it harder and tempt me even more, and in some ways it does. But I do find it quite relaxing seeing whats around in the shops and whats coming into fashion. I'm very much an impulse buyer but doing things this way means I have time to think about it. I won't go out on a whim and buy something that will sit at the back of my cupboard never to be used. That being said I was very tempted by the Topshop crop shirt. I love the detail on the back, its the simple things that make something look much more effective and gives a twist to classic styles.

Review: Barry M Gelly Hi-Shine Nail Paint

Picture of Barry M Gelly Hi Shine Nail Paint

I love pastel shades. If I had to choose between neon and pastels, pastels would win every time. I was looking round Boots the other day for some new summer colour nail polishes when I stumbled upon these little beauties. Barry M are famed for their large variety of nail polishes and also there nail effects. One of their latest additions is the Gelly Hi-Shine Nail Paints. Being the huge fan of Gelish that I am, these nail polishes sounded right up my street.

The Good
The great thing about these nail paints is the finish. As the name suggests, you are left with an ultra glossy 'hi shine' finish that you don't need to apply a top coat to. The Barry M polishes are easy to apply and quite opaque in colour, although Prickly Pear needs two coats to reach the true colour. The price is also great, £3.99 each but there are regularly deals in Boots and Superdrug making them the perfect little treat when you need a pick me up. Oh and I almost forgot the most important thing! These Nail Paints are amazingly fast drying. The one thing I hate about painting my nails is spending lots of time creating the perfect manicure and then accidentally knocking them. Its the worst feeling ever. But these are great a dry within minutes.

The Bad
Even though you don't need to, I would still apply a top coat just to lock the colour in and keep your manicure chip free for longer. I really struggle to keep my nails chip free with ALL nail polishes. I think its the condition of my nails, as I've been an addicted nail bitter all my life which means the tips of my nails like to peel off.

Overall Thoughts
I definitely recommend the Barry M Nail Paints. These Hi Shine Gelly Paints produce really good results and with a variety of colours all perfect for the summer you will definitely find something you like.

How to...Wear Brogues!

A picture of Topshop Tan Brogues

I wanted to try and do something a little different today. I bought these brogues from Topshop last year because I thought they looked really cute, but when I got home I started to become unsure, did I actually have anything that would go with brogues? Is this my kind of style? I started looking through my wardrobe and putting together some outfits which is when my love of brogues really started to come alive. I realised that brogues are for everyone and can pretty much go with everything!

Look 1 - Casual

A picture of how to style brogues for a casual daytime look

Pair your brogues with any pair of jeans, a plain t-shirt and a blazer and your ready to go. The more simple the outfit, the better in my eyes as this gives the brogues a real chance to stand out and give your outfit that edge. This is the perfect look for going shopping, comfy but cute.

Look 2 - Daytime Cute

A picture of how to style brogues for a casual daytime look

This is my other favourite way to wear brogues. You can wear them with any floral dress and they will instantly look great. The manlyness of the shoes tones down that girly side to give you a great balance. I like to go back to my primary school days with this one and wear my brogues with some cute white socks.

Look 3 - Night time

Occasionally, when I don't feel in the mood to wear heels (or if I know its going to be quite a heavy night and its safer to stay away from heels) I like to wear brogues as an alternative. Be sure to team it with a bright outfit so that it doesn't look too daytime, but in my opinion a nice pair of shorts and blazer is perfect for an evening look.

Make-up Inspiration - Dior Be Iconic Gloss Advert

I love looking through magazines to get inspiration for new make-up looks, hair and fashion looks. When looking through this months Elle, the advert for the Dior Be Iconic Gloss caught my eye.

 Heres my interpretation of it

I've never been a fan of orange lips, I just can't pull the look off with my pale skin. But I found a MAC Pro Longwear Lipglass in the colour Whoops and I love it. It is the perfect shade of orange for my skin tone and it means that I can still wear the trend even if I don't go all out.

I've also been loving the combo of pink and gold eyes. you can't see too well in this picture but all over my lids is a pale pink eye shadow with a small amount of gold in the inner corners of my eye. I find that this makes me look much more awake and makes a nice change to the normal smokey eye look I would go for.

Review: Lee Stafford Dry Shampoo Dark

When it comes to my hair, I'm very lazy. More often than not you will find me with either a pony tail or top bun just because its so much easier than washing, drying and straightening my hair every morning. I would definitely rather have an extra hour in bed. Not to mention I don't like to wash my hair everyday, I like it to soak up that oily goodness. The Lee Stafford Dry Shampoo Dark has been a real life saver for me an is fast becoming my holy grail product that you won't see me without.

How to use
Using Lee Stafford Dry Shampoo couldn't be easier. I like to brush through my hair and lift it up and give it a quick spray, this lets you get right to the roots. I do this all over my hair and then rub it in with my fingers and hey presto your ready to go!

The Good
Well where do I begin. This product really does refresh your hair and extends the time you can go between washing your hair. With my dark hair, I find that when I use other dry shampoos I look like I've aged about 50 years and suddenly I have grey hair. Not exactly the look I'm going for. With the Lee Stafford Dry Shampoo in Dark, it blends into my hair naturally so no need to frantically try to brush the grey out. It is also perfect for giving extra volume. I often find my hair can look like its been freshly blow dried after using this product. Throw in the cute pink packaging and the ease of use and this baby pretty much has everything you could need.

The Bad
Theres not much bad about the actual product but it is quite expensive. If you use this as much as I do then you'll find paying £5.49 for a can quite an increase from a £2 can of Batiste. But Boots are always doing 3 for 2 on Lee Stafford products and thats when I try to stock up!

Overall Thoughts
I definitely think that everyone with dark hair like mine should try this product out. It does everything it says and fits perfectly into your daily routine.

"Clothes mean nothing until someone lives in them" - Marc Jacobs

Shirt and Jeans: Both Zara | Shoes: Topshop | Bag: Marc Jacobs

Another bank holiday has come to a close and what lovely weather we had for it! I really wanted to go to the beach today but alas, it wasn't meant to be. I did however manage to get sun burned on a quick bike ride to the pub. Dam my pasty pale skin! Last night I went to the cinema to watch the new Iron Man with my boyfriend. I must admit I'm a bit of a super hero movie geek, I love anything like Iron Man, Avengers, X-Men etc etc. We stopped off before we went and this is what I wore. I bought both the jeans and shirt from Zara in Rome a few weeks ago but I couldn't find them on the website :( The shirt is beautiful and is my new go to top. It has a slight bat wing and beautiful flower details all over which gives it a cute edge.

Wish List #1

Over the last few weeks (well months actually but hey who's counting) I've spent a little bit too much on all things beauty and fashion. Now in my eyes you can never have enough, however my cupboards and draws are telling me enough is enough and I need to calm down a bit. I'm going to attempt a 5 week spending ban which will hopefully encourage me to use up lots of products I already have and actually wear clothes I've already bought. I have to many beautiful clothes with tags on still and they are crying out to me to be worn, so wish me luck! I'm not sure if this is a good idea or not but I've decided to do a weekly wish list of things that I might have bought or would like to buy in the future when my ban is lifted. Here is week 1 :)

April Empties: What I loved last month!

It's that time of the month again where every beauty blogger makes a list of beauty products they've been loving recently and who am I not to join in? It may be 2nd May but I always say better late than never! If I was to write a list of everything I've been using a lot or really enjoying, it would be a very long list! So I'm going to share with you the products I have actually FINISHED, because you all know as a beauty blogger how hard it is to finish a product before you move onto the next one to try ;) So here goes...

Skin

I recently review a liquid make-up remover,  but that doesn't mean I don't use make-up wipes. The Nivea Daily Essentials Refreshing Facial Cleansing Wipes were recently on offer where I work, and I'm never one to spend much on face wipes (it seems pretty pointless to me, they just go in the bin!), so I thought I'd try them out. I was very impressed. One side of the wipe is a smooth surface, whilst the other side has little bumps. This is really great as the wipe is slightly exfoliating and really works well at getting all your make-up off!

Another Nivea product I can't get enough of is the Nivea Pure and Natural Lip Balm. Made with milk and honey, this product is extremely moisturising to your lips and is really smooth to apply. I prefer a lip balm in the form of a stick as I find it easier to apply and is quick and simple. I find this one quite hard to get hold of sometimes but when I see it, I stock up.

I've always enjoyed taking some time out to pamper myself, and if you like to do this too then you need to try Montagne Jeunesse Mud Pac. This face mask is an ultra deep pore cleanser, which is exactly what I need as I'm quite prone to blackheads :( I use this once a week and I often find I can get two applications out of one of these little packs!

There are so many great things I can say about MAC Studio Moisture Fix. As I have dry skin I find that my make-up can look really cakey when I apply my powder. After a couple of squirts of this the cakiness has gone! Magic. It is super moisturising, very lightweight and absorbs into your skin quickly. And it even has SPF 15 in it, what more could you want?

Again going down the dry skin route, I need to moisturise my body after every shower. Garnier Intensive 7 Day Nody Lotion for Extra Dry Skin is great and is really god on all those extra dry areas like your elbows and ankles. I do find that it can take quite a while to absorb into my skin but I don't mind that as when it has, the results are fantastic.

Make-up

I bought the Laura Mercier Secret Concealer on a whim on a shopping trip with my cousin before christmas. it was just by chance that the assistant tried it on me and I was amazed that it actually managed to cover the bags under my eyes, which is a pretty hard task for any concealer as they are quite big! It is definitely not light weight, it actually applies quite thick so if your looking for something light then this isn't for you. But if you want a product that covers your dark eyes then you should give this a try.

MAC Prep + Prime Skin is also another little wonder product. I must admit I am hopeless with remembering to use primer, but after using this one I find it much easier to apply my foundation. It gives me a smoother surface to work on and I also find it evens out the redness in my skin. It's a little pricey, but you need such a small amount, mines lasted me forever!

And last but by no means least, it's the every popular Benefit they're real Mascara. I tried the Bad Gal mascara but didn't think much of it, but this one is a whole other kettle of fish. I love the rubber wand, I find them much easier to work with, they give volume and cover the entire lash. I'm actually quite sad that mine has run out, but I did just get a free sample in this months Elle magazine :)

What did you use up last month?

“You can never be overdressed or overeducated.” - Oscar Wilde

Blazer: H&M, Top and Skirt: New Look, Shoes: Debenhams, Bag: Mango Bracelet: Primark

Today I thought I'd try something new and did my very first outfit of the day! I was inspired by Kate Middleton's recent outfit she wore to Harry Potter Studio Tour. I just loved how she teamed a polka dot dress, from Topshop I might add, with a simple black blazer to create a very classy and pulled together look that still has a casual feel. I had a little look through my wardrobe and pulled out this old New Look skirt and thought I'd give the look a go myself.
